Scout, a rebellious teenager from rural Texas, and Sam, a wealthy suicidal New Yorker, are polar opposites, but when the two meet through the fence of the posh mental institute where he is staying, they form an instant bond.

After Scout loses the only thing in the world that really matters to her – her little sister, Lulu—she convinces Sam to go on a road trip with her to get Lulu back.

ABOUT SCOUT is a touching tale of two misfits coming together to create a new kind of family.

The film was co-written by Laurie Welts and her daughter India Ennenga, who plays the title character of Scout.

The film also stars James Frecheville, Nikki Reed, Danny Glover and Ellen Burstyn and had its world premiere at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 25, 2015.

Laurie joins us today in Refilmery’s recording studio in New York to discuss her film About Scout.

About the Director

LAURIE WELTZ – WRITER, DIRECTOR

Laurie first film was the award winning, WRESTLING WITH ALLIGATORS, which starred Joely Richardson, Aleksa Palladino, Claire Bloom, Adrienne Shelly, Sam Trammel and Jay O. Sanders. Alligators premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for a Grand Jury Prize, and went on to have a theatrical and video release and has aired on Showtime, Stars and the Sundance Channel.

Laurie has written two other optioned award winning feature screenplays and has worked for many years as a freelance director and editor on documentaries, television programs, short films and industrial videos. She has an MFA in film from NYU.
